“I used to take Billy, Danny and Robert Etbauer’s lunch money including Tom Reeves at a lot of rodeos, we are all about the same age. Bud Longbrake too.”
When did you start an interest in rodeo? When I was six years old, my Dad would saddle a horse with his bronc saddle and take me riding in it.
What other sports other than rodeo do you enjoy? I was the best high school football players in the state in 1983. But all I wanted to do is rodeo, and that is what I love doing for over 30 plus years.
What is the funniest thing that you have seen or experienced at a rodeo? “That is a good question. I’ve seen a bunch, but the funniest was at a pro rodeo in Bell Fourche where Jerry Small flanked a steer in a performance and the judge rodeo over and said “Jerry can you do that and he said, I just did it.”
What advice would you give to Indian youth who wanted to participate in rodeo but didn’t have the resources or support to get involved? Watch all you can of videos of the event you want to be in. I taught myself how to steer wrestle. Cheyenne “the Daddy” was my first time ever in 1995. Rode Harris Halagin’s Yello Dog, who was the PRCA horse of the year, and I was 27 seconds, was a whoopin 126 pounds and I told myself if I can bulldog in Cheyenne, I can bulldog at any rodeo.
Speaking of Cheyenne Frontier Days, Duffy was at the “Daddy” the year Lane Frost was killed, from there he went to Dodge City Kansas. He was at the Black Hills stock show when Ty Murray was the first TP ride Mr T, and Duffy was the first one to go over and shake his hand.
Duffy rode all the rank broncs in the PRCA that no one else could, such as, “High Lonesome, Dumas Walker, Ike Sankey’s tuff ones and Harry Vold’s Eight Ball at the 1986 INFR.
Are their any songs that inspire or pump you up before you ride or rope? Rock n Roll, Kid Rock and Cowboy Baby.
What would you like to see more of at Indian Rodeos? More money to the cowboys.
What are/is your favorite western movie(s)? I was a stuntman in Dances with Wolves.
What is your favorite music? Rock n Roll.
What was your most memorable ride or run? Well, there is two on the same weekend. Dumas Walker and High Lonesome of Brookmans, both are rank, and rode them in the 90’s. At Crow Fair, rode Boot Scoot Boogie, also a Brookman’s bronc.
Who is your favorite Indian Cowgirl? My favorite is Sharon Small, watched her when she was just a little girl and beat the older ladies.
Who is your all time hero? Well, Jesus is, but Harlan Gunville was the man, Mr. PRCA, classy man and had the best broncs in the PRCA at that time and Indian rodeos.
Howard Hunter is my Hero.
Would you like to thank sponsors and or anyone for your success in rodeo? I would like to thank Jerry Small, Spike Gardipee, Harlan Gunville, and Joe Berger, Chad Berger’s Dad who pushed me to ride the rank ones.
